Like I mentioned, we always do a full analysis when we bring in a new client.

But we also analyze the ongoing campaign every quarter.

This is to make sure we haven't forgotten anything and to find out any new problems.


Analysis is always a good way to evaluate our performance.


There are two cases in which we analyze sites:


At the beginning of each new campaign

Now that you understand the basics, let's start with the first step of SEO analysis.

Follow these 9 steps and you'll be done. Remember, a successful SEO campaign is the product of hundreds of positive ranking factors. That's why it's important that you scrutinize every detail of your campaign. A 100% campaign isn't meant to be perfect, but that should be your goal.

I've said this before and I'll say it again:


A SEO campaign is a means to an end.


It is nothing but a marketing channel to grow your business.

If you have had strategic goals before, now is the time to review them.



Are your goals intelligent, i.e. are they specific, can they be measured, can they be achieved, are they realistic and relevant, and are they time-framed?

If you don't have strategic goals for your SEO campaign, now is the time to create them.

You need to retest your current set of keywords before first jumping into the analysis.

Are you targeting the right keywords?


Often times companies target prominent keywords.


They think they can win with the main keywords...but they often fail.


Good analysis will help you determine the quality of your keywords .


More often than not, I find the client is targeting long-term, less competitive keywords.


My team and I refer to these keywords as 'easy win'.


It's a good idea to do a review of your existing keywords.


You should do this every three months.


It is always better to focus your resources on keywords that are doing well.


Don't waste your resources on many keywords.


Isolate the winning words alone and focus on them.


But you may be wondering now:


How do I know I'm targeting the right keywords?


Visualize your keywords as if they were your goals.


Each keyword you decide to target is a goal you want to achieve for your SEO campaign.


This means that you need to use the SMART goals specification.

How fast is your site loading?

How quickly your site loads affects the user experience in a positive or negative way.


That is why we put this item at the top of our technical analysis list.

Any site that takes more than 3 seconds to load has room for improvement, and if you can load your site in less than 1 second that's perfect, but it's a challenge.


Is the site compatible with phones?

This is a no brainer but you need to check if your site is mobile compatible or not.


Google considers this a strong ranking factor, so don't underestimate it.

Are there problems with redirection?

There are four types of redirects that can harm SEO performance:


1. 302 . redirects


2. Redirect Strings


3. A non-preferred version of the range and not a preferred 301ing


4. Unlocked version of the domain and not 301ing for the secure version


5. Unnecessary 301 Redirect Messages


Let's start with the 302 redirect.


302 . redirects

302 redirects are "temporary" redirects and do not pass authority. 302 redirects must be changed to 301 to pass link authority.


To see if you have any 302 redirects, open Screaming Frog SEO Spider.


• Enter the target URL and start the scan


• Go to the “Response Codes” tab


• Click on the “Filter” drop-down menu and select “Redirection 3xx”

Does the non-preferred version of the domain redirect with a 301 message to the preferred version?


All website owners must select the version of their site that they want to display to their users.


Some people prefer “www” while others prefer www-free domains, be aware that whatever you choose will not have an impact on your SEO performance.


Google treats them the same way, so it's a question of which one you prefer.


Problems arise if you do not forward the non-preferred domain to the preferred domain.


For example, let's say you decide to choose "www.awesomewebsite.com".


By doing this, www becomes your preferred domain.


Now, a domain without www becomes your non-preferred domain and vice versa.


You should redirect with a 301 message to your non-preferred domain, if you don't you will end up with two duplicate sites and lose authority.


I've found that sites built on custom platforms suffer from this problem.


The developers are minimizing the repercussions of keeping two copies of the site alive.


Most likely they will not redirect the non-preferred version of the domain with a 301 message to the preferred version.


The bottom line is that if you don't redirect you'll get two duplicate sites.

Does the insecure version of the site redirect with a 301 message to the secure version?


Let's just say that moving your site to an SSL certificate wasn't good.


Many sites make the right decision to secure their sites with a certificate.


But many struggle to complete certification.


Many clients forget to redirect the unsecured site (http) with a 301 message to the secure site (https), this has the same effect as not redirecting the non-preferred domain to the preferred.


Defining this problem is simple:

Is the site indexed well?

Sitemaps

Your site should have a sitemap, this helps with the indexing process.


If you use WordPress then Yoast will automatically create one for you.


If you are not using Yoast, install the XML Sitemap plugin.


For those using dedicated or non-Wordpress websites, you will have to follow the traditional path.

Go to Google and type "site: yourwebsite.com".

This will show you how well your site will be indexed.


If your site doesn't show up as a first result, you probably have a penalty.


Or you are preventing the search engine from crawling your site.


Is there duplicate content?

Your site can contain duplicate content and this can result in your site being subject to a Panda penalty.


Online stores are more prone to content duplication issues because they copy manufacturer product descriptions.


To stop this they will also use information from the META tags to cut cookies for those pages.

Are there 404 error pages (with equal link)?

Not all 404 pages are created equal.


First, let me dispel the common myth that “all 404 errors are harmful to better SEO”.

404 pages are an effective tool for telling search engines that the page no longer exists.


When a search engine like Google finds a 404 page, it will remove that page from the index.


For intentional 404 errors this is exactly what you want.

Is your site structure effective to improve your site's linking to search engines?

Many audits bypass the structure of the site, but this is a huge mistake.


Designers often don't include SEO when designing a site.


Oddly enough, this isn't always a bad thing, because many companies build their site based on what they think the user wants.


You should always be user-centric while building your strategy to improve your site's SEO.


But you still need to be direct and satisfy the search engine at the same time.


The robust site architecture satisfies both users and search engines.


When examining the structure of the site, ask the following questions:


• Are the transportation links organized or scattered?


• Do internal links use active anchor text?


• Can you improve navigation to make it easier for users and search engines?


Is the link structure optimized for linking the site to search engines?

We always analyze the link structure of the pages during the review to ensure that they are appropriate to improve the site's relevance to search engines.


But we also be careful at this point.


The link structure should not be changed if the customer's site is performing well.


The reason is that you have to redirect the old link with a 301 message to the new address.


301 redirects are intermittent and will not always send trust and authority from the old link.


This means that you could end up losing ratings for a long time.


Changing your link to a more optimized version is likely to help your site cleaner in the long run.


You just have to be willing to lose some traffic from organic search engines up front, or you can just avoid changing links at all.


Now, if the customer site is not categorized for any keyword, we will always suggest changing the links structure (if the structure is bad).


Use your judgment and remember that "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."


Over-optimized links


In an attempt to manipulate the search engine some customers are stuffing their links with keywords, keyword stuffing on your site is never a good practice, in fact it is likely to hurt your performance more than it helps.


Here is an example of a link full of keywords that we encounter often:

You will notice that “cool widgets” are present in the link three times, whether that is intentional or not, it will harm the performance of the page.


I recommend removing the "cool-widgets" subfolder so that the link looks like this:

Are the internal links added correctly?

Ineffective or unstrategic internal linking can confuse search engines, internal links should be clear and should use exactly the same anchor text.


If you have a page about blue widgets, blue widgets should be the internal link text.

Unfortunately, I see this problem recur over and over again when we audit sites.


Finding ineffective internal links is not easy...


You have to look page by page to find out and fix it.


This is one of the most time consuming SEO tweaks you will encounter.


To avoid this from happening, just make sure you always use good practices.


Most internal link text must use an exact or partial match link text.

Your target keyword for the page should be in the title. The keyword must appear only once.

Is the keyword in the META description ?

Make sure the target keyword is in the META description, don't fill it in there more than once.


Is the target keyword present in the first sentences?

Your keyword should appear once at the beginning of the content, to reinforce the page's relevance.


Is the URL optimized for SEO and is it clean?

The landing page should include the target keyword in the URL and the URL should be short and clean.


Does the ALT tag on the first image of the page contain the target keyword ?

All of your ALT tags must be filled in, but your page keyword must appear in the ALT tag of the first image.

Content analysis is the most time consuming part of this process.

But fortunately you can get an overall picture of the user experience based on the data inside Google Analytics.


There are a few data that you need to examine in analyzing your site's user experience:


bounce rate

You'll likely be wondering, "What is a good bounce rate?"


Unfortunately, there is no clear answer.


Bounce rate is relative and depends on the type of site.


For example, a site that specializes in “funny cat pictures” is likely to have a high bounce rate.


That's because people go to the page, laugh, and leave.


Sites like mine will have lower bounce rates because people will want to read and learn more.


However, the bounce rate between 60% - 80% is considered constant.


80% - 90% rate is sufficient to consider the problem.


If it is above 90%, it should be at the top of the priority list.


The average time a user spends on the site

The longer your users stay on your site, the more chances you have of converting them into regular customers.


Like the bounce rate, the average time a user spends on a site is relative.


If the average time a user spends on the site is less than 1 minute, you definitely need to check for the problem.


As a general rule, users will spend more time on your site if there is a lot of content to consume.


For example, readers spend an average of 2:52 minutes on Gotch SEO.


If that's less than a minute, I'll start questioning my content strategy and my site in general.


There is one thing that will quickly repel users:

Lack of quality content.

The longer users stay on your site and absorb your content, the more they will feel that they “know you”.

You have to ask the simple question “Why do they leave this particular page more than others?”


Believe it or not, it's not always a bad thing to have a high page exit rate.


Sometimes the content does its job for the reader and forces them to step out and take action.


Don't always think that users leave a particular page because they hate it.


If the content solves the user's problem and leaves the page, then you have done your job.


There is one very important thing to keep in mind when checking the exit rate within Google Analytics.


Don't look at the total number of exits.


Total exit times will always be higher on pages that get more traffic.


The number you should look at is "% Exit".


Sort your data by highest to lowest percentage.


The “high” exit rate is more than 80% and the “normal” exit rate is between 50 and 65%.


The #1 problem that will force people to leave the page at a high frequency is that the content did not solve their problem or answer the questions they had.


There are other factors that may force people to leave a page like the design, but the content is always the reason.


Go to the page with the highest exit rate and ask these questions:


• Does this page completely solve a problem or answer a question?


• Are there still some questions left unanswered?


• Is the content readable?


• Are there too many large blocks of text?


• Are there too few pictures?


• Are there broken images?


• Is the page loading slowly?


• Are there distractions such as ads that might send the user off your site?


• Are you setting external links to “open in a new window” (if not, you should do so)?


These questions should be more than enough to get to the heart of the problem, do this process for every page with a high exit rate.

The number of visitors who return to your site is a strong positive signal from the user.


This means that your site or content is worth seeing again.


Returning visitors are also good from the point of view of converting them into customers as this gives you more opportunities to convert them into leads or email subscribers.


If you don't have a high rate of return visitors this could be a sign of a lack of content, or that your site has one or more technical or content related issues I described above that are frustrating users.


Brand searches

As with returning visitors, brand searches are a strong indicator of people's interest in your site and brand.


If you produce great content and your site is built with users in mind, people will want to come back to your site, that means they will go to Google and search for your brand.


To see how successful you are currently, you will need to use Google Search Console.


Go to “Search Traffic” and click on “Search Analytics”, filter by “Clicks” so that the search query with the most clicks is on top.

We use Ahrefs, Majestic, Open Site Explorer, and Google Search Console to analyze links.


Now you might be wondering: What are we looking for?


We're looking at a few different factors:

Correlation is the chief when it comes to link building.


This is where I always start link checking.


Are text links back to the site relevant?


Text links don't have to be 100% relevant but the majority should be.


To quickly determine the suitability of a customer's cookie, we export their links from Ahrefs and use bulk checking on Majestic.


When you export from Ahrefs, be sure to export the reference ranges like this:

Now you're going to take those reference ranges and use Majestic's comprehensive scan to see the Topical Trust Flow Topics.


Although the Topical Trust Flow Topic Scale is not perfect, it is the only usable Fit Scale.


Manually checking the relevance of each linked site would be a waste of time.


The goal of this exercise is to get an overall picture of the relevance of the domains associated with the customer's site.


Go to “Tools” > “Link Map Tools” > “Bulk Backlinks”.

Put the reference ranges into the bulk checker and export the results. Sort your CSV file based on Topical Trust Flow Topics.


Identify link sources that are completely off the wall.


If you are a lawyer and have a text link from a domain containing Topical Trust Flow Topics for “pets,” you should be concerned.


Mark all backlinks that are not relevant, this does not mean that you will remove them.


It's just a way for you to know it's there, that way you can come back to it if your site gets penalized.

After link relevance, link reliability comes second.


In fact, pure reliability can sometimes mask a lack of relevance.


I prefer relevance before reliability because I think it keeps your site more secure than algorithmic updates.


But each of them is important!


There are several ways to see how "reliable" your text links are.

Ahrefs “Domain Rating” (DR) is an accurate measure of a site's reliability.


It is more accurate than Big Authority and Domain Authority because it is updated frequently.


Data from Open Site Explorer is refreshed at a slow and inaccurate pace most of the time.

Open Site Explorer awards GotchSEO.com 25 domain authority and claims the site only has 30 root domains link…


Ahrefs 562 displays their link root domain and only shows about 80% of the text links that GotchSEO.com already owns.


With that said, you can use Open Site Explorer for cross-validation, but don't rely on its metrics alone.


Another metric that is almost impossible to "play with" is the SEMRush score.


This is because it is based on real organic search engine rankings.


SEM Rush uses its own algorithm to determine the "value" of organic visitor traffic.


It's not perfect, but it's a metric I rely on daily to determine the quality of my hookup opportunities.


Use all the metrics at your disposal to measure the quality of your existing text links or opportunities.

Diversifying your backlinks makes your profile “natural”.


The different 'types' of backlinks include:


• contextual links


• Site-wide footer/sidebar links


• Directory Links


• Resource page links or resources


• Specialized Profile Links


• Forum links


• Related Blog Comment Links


In addition to the text link "type", you also want to have a variety of follow and unfollow domains.


In this part of the analysis, just ask the simple question:


“Is my cookie diverse enough?”

Another important link factor that you need to check is the ratio of homepage links to internal links.

Diversify the link text

Body text abuse is rampant and that's why we always check the proportions.


The first percentage we care about is the customer's percentage of the exact match body.


Next, we want to see what percentage of the body is branded.


If EMA is outpacing branded links, there must be a change in strategy.


As you know, the bulk of your link text should be branding text.


EMA should be used sparingly and sparingly in between because it is a strong signal of spam to Google.


If the customer suffers from overly optimized anchor text, there are a few solutions:


• Create new text links with branded anchor text to compensate for over-optimization


• Consider changing some of your EMA to branded anchor text


Total Referral Domains

The more unique referral domains a site links to, the better.

Historical link speed

Has the link speed remained constant throughout the life of the site? Or was it irregular?


The dramatic decreases in correlation loss are questionable.


Text links from real websites rarely drop.


Text links drop from synthetic sites when link providers stop paying for their hosting or don't renew the domain.
