Explain how to do SEO analysis of competitors and get great ideas for backlinks

SEO analysis of competitors or as it is called competitive analysis is very important as it is an essential aspect in the early stages of a website optimization campaign for search engines. What often happens is that organizations completely skip this important step and start right away with setting keywords, optimizing content or building links. But to understand who our competitors are and to be able to identify their positions on the scene helps us to understand much more what our goals should be and exposes us to the gaps and weaknesses.

At the end of the analysis, you will be able to gain a comprehensive view of what keywords are important, and which backlink strategies work best, which can then be used to gain and increase organic traffic to your site.

?Why is SEO analysis of competitors so important?

Competitive SEO analysis is crucial simply because it provides important data about what technologies are being worked on in your industry and what you will need to do to start improving your keyword rankings. The insight gained through this analysis helps us understand the tasks we should prioritize, and the way we structure our campaigns. By seeing whether our competitors are stronger or weaker, we can determine how difficult the road ahead is and the resources we need to outperform our competitors.

SEO Success Factors (Search Engine Optimization)

Identify competitors

The first step in this process is to determine who are the most important and best competitors we want to use in this analysis. I like to use a mixture of competitors through direct business (usually you can identify these competitors from the same customers) and others by searching online. Usually there is a big difference between the two, and this discrepancy is due to the local business competitors and those who pay for online search ads. Although your customer may be worried about a competitor in the same city, the actual competition is online and may be a business from a neighboring city or another country.

To find search competitors, simply enter your domain name into the next SEMrush search box , scroll down to the “ Organic Competitors ” section, and choose View Full Report .

The main metrics I use to help me choose competitors are common keywords and total traffic. After selecting my competitors for analysis, download and open the competitor analysis form in Google Sheetsto the Review Data tab and fill in the names and addresses of the competitors in rows 2 and 3.

Why Use Google's Competitive Analysis Spreadsheets Template

A clear and defined process is critical not only to obtaining repeatable results, but to scaling up efforts when you start doing this for multiple clients. We created our competitor analysis template so that we can follow a strategic process and focus more on analyzing results rather than looking for new items each time.

In Google Sheets template, I gave you the data points we'd collect, the tools we'd need, and then metrics were created based on similar themes. The data we try to collect relates to SEO metrics such as domain strength, traffic that competitors get, which keywords are driving traffic, and depth of backlinks for competitor profiles. I've put together some charts for key metrics to help you visualize who's the strongest at a glance.

This model is intended as a base that you can change according to the specific needs of the client and the metrics that you consider to be most important or feasible.

Backlinks gap analysis

Backlinks gap analysis tells us which websites are linking to our competitors, not ours. This is vital because we can fill in the backlinks competitor profiles gap and start boosting our ranking by getting links from sites that link primarily to competitors. Websites that link to many competitors (especially when there are more than three competitors) have a much higher success rate for us when we start connecting with them and creating content for guest posts.

In order to generate this report, you should head over to the Moz Open Site أداة toolAnd enter the competitor's domain name first. After that, click on “Linking Domains”

In the navigation bar on the right side then click on “Request CSV” to get the required data.

Repeat this process for 2-4 competitors and then for your website in the corresponding tabs indicated in red.

Once you have all your data in the correct tabs, the Backlink Gap Analysis tab will be filled in. The result is a highly actionable report showing where your competitors are getting their backlinks from, those you jointly own, and those you don't currently own.

It's also a good practice to hide all the "Import" tabs marked in red after pasting data into them, so the final report has a cleaner look. To do this, right-click on the tabs and select Hide Sheet, so the report only shows the selected tabs in blue and green.

For our clients, we usually get a few backlinks at the start of an SEO campaign just from this data alone. It also serves as a long-term guide to building links in the coming months as getting links from premium sites takes a lot of time and resources.

Keywords and gap analysis

Keyword gap analysis is the process of identifying which keywords your competitors are doing well and which your site does not have. From there, we perform a back-to-back analysis of why competitors rank well, and then look at how those keywords rank. Oftentimes, it may be possible to reformat metadata, modify site structure, revamp an existing piece of content, create entirely new content for your keyword topic, or create links to your content containing these desired keywords.

To create this report, a process similar to backlink gap analysis is followed; Only the data sources change. Go to SEMrush again and enter your first competitor's domain name in the next search box. Then click on the “Organic Research” report in the navigation menu on the right side and click on “Export” on the left.
